The University of Minnesota Combined Medicine-Dermatology Residency Program is designed to prepare each resident to begin independent practice of both Internal Medicine and Dermatology and to eligible for the certification exams in each specialty. The graduate may also pursue academic practice, advanced training, research careers or fellowships in either field. Each resident will have graded autonomy responsibilities in Medicine and Dermatology throughout the five years of training.
The first year of training emphasizes the resident's development of a strong foundation in Internal Medicine so that they are able to:
- Recognize acuity of medical illness
- Manage individual cases and initiate interventions
- Advance and coordinate care in a complex medical system
- Develop a level of efficiency and multi-task as an advanced resident
- Understand how to find support materials and information to optimize care
- Participate in learning opportunities oriented towards a first year resident
The second year of the program provides an emphasis in dermatology so that the resident:
- Understands the common dermatological manifestations of diseases
- Has a broad experience in recognizing and effecting treatment of dermatologic disorders
- Develops basic skills in dermatologic surgery, pathology and clinical pathological correlates
By the third year, residents will be able to assume a supervisory role for either medicine or dermatologic trainees at more junior levels.
The residents are expected to be of high moral character, educationally motivated and good citizens of the program in carrying out their responsibilities.
Each resident will have publication responsibilities and will be expected to participate in the preparation and execution of the yearly Minnesota Dermatological Society meeting.
Residents will be encouraged to present at the annual American College of Physicians state, regional and national meeting, as well as publish case reports, literature reviews and original publications based on research abstracts that they present at national meetings
All residents will be required to perform systematic literature reviews leading to a presentation/lecture that will be evaluated by faculty and fellow residents.
