Professional Biography: Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. received his B.A. from Carleton College, and went on to receive a Masters degree in Molecular Biology from Mayo Clinic in 1993. Dr. Crutchfield graduated from medical school at Mayo Clinic in 1994, and completed his internship at Gundersen Clinic in 1995. Dr. Crutchfield then completed his residency in Dermatology at the University of Minnesota in 1998.
During his dermatology residency he was awarded the "Distinguished Teaching Award" from the Minnesota Medical Foundation during 2 of his 3 years for his work with the medical students. He also initiated and completed a clinical research study on psoriasis
Dr. Crutchfield is actively involved in medical student, resident and community physician education.
Dr. Crutchfield has over 100 peer-reviewed and editorially reviewed publications, and co-authored a dermatology textbook "A Clinical Atlas (and textbook) of 101 Common Skin Diseases" with Bernie Ackerman, M.D.
Dr. Crutchfield has been awarded the prestigious "Gold Triangle Award" from the American Academy of Dermatology for his radio show "Med-Chat" that promoted dermatologic awareness in the African-American community. Dr. Crutchfield has also been awarded the A.O.A. "Clinical Faculty Teacher of the Year" by a vote of the University of Minnesota medical students.
Dr. Crutchfield is an annual selection in the "Top Doctors" issue of Minneapolis-St Paul Magazine. Recently, he was selected as one of the "5 Best Dermatologists for Women in Minnesota" by Minnesota Monthly magazine. Dr. Crutchfield has also been honored as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in a survey of 30,000 physicians, nationally. This award is given to only 4% of all practicing doctors.
Dr. Crutchfield is a Diplomat of both the American Board of Dermatology and the United States National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgery, American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, O’Leary Dermatologic Society, National Medical Association, American Medical Association, Minnesota Dermatologic Society, Minnesota Medical Association, Ramsey County Medical Society; Doctors Mayo Society, Mayo Alumni Association and the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians. In addition to his teaching endeavors at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Crutchfield is a Distinguished Benedict Professor of Biology at Carleton College, teaching the popular course "Cutaneous biology for the premedical student" every spring term. He is the vice president of the Minnesota Association of Black Physicians, and Treasurer of the Ramsey Medical Society. He continues to write, and conduct psoriasis research and has recently been granted a U.S. patent for one of his psoriatic medications. Dr. Crutchfield lectures locally, nationally and internationally on many dermatologic topics. His areas of interest include psoriasis, acne, vitiligo, cosmetic dermatology and ethnic skin concerns. He was recently featured with a full page article in the "Top Doctors" edition of the Minneapolis-St. Paul magazine. Dr. Crutchfield is also Medical director of "Crutchfield Dermatology" in Eagan, the first dermatologic practice to implement electronic medical records in the state of Minnesota.
