Professional Biography:
Dr Holmes has been a dermatologist with the Park Nicollet Clinic in Minneapolis for 31 years. Dr. Holmes was born in Jackson, Michigan and raised in East Grand Rapids. He received his BA from Albion College in 1962. His residency training in internal medicine at Iowa was interrupted in 1968 for military service in Vietnam where he was an army flight surgeon with the 101st Airborne Division during 1968 and 1969. Following military service in 1970, he changed his specialty and began his residency in dermatology at the University of Iowa. On completion of this training and after passing his dermatology boards in l973, he joined the Park Nicollet Clinic where he continues to practice today. Dr. Holmes and his wife Nancy, also an Albion graduate and a nutritionist with General Mills, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2003. They have three married daughters and three grandchildren.
Because of a desire to become more involved in formal dermatology teaching, Dr Holmes in 1999 joined the University of Minnesota Department of Dermatology on a quarter time basis. In his second year with the dermatology department, he helped to establish a continuity clinic for dermatology residents. This program was expanded by the department in 2003 to involve all residents and dermatology staff. He continues to mentor two residents in the University continuity clinic each Thursday morning and works with dermatology-elective medical students, internal medicine residents and rotating dermatology residents in the afternoons of that day. In 2003 he was instrumental in getting his home clinic of Park Nicollet approved as the fourth training site for dermatology residents. At Park Nicollet , a junior or senior resident has a three month continuity experience in a suburban private practice. There Dr. Holmes works one-on-one with the resident three half days a week and his dermatology colleagues work with the resident on the other three half days.
Dr. Holmes’s special interests in dermatology include painless local anesthesia , minor non-cosmetic surgery , sclerotherapy , and dermatologic photography. He speaks on dermatology subjects four times a year at Park Nicollet’s Continuing Education Seminars for primary care physicians. He has been a volunteer dermatologist at the Uptown Clinic in downtown Minneapolis for 13 years. This clinic serves uninsured children and adults living in the Minneapolis-St Paul area. He also sees dermatology patients one day a month at the Granite and Montevideo Clinics located in rural western Minnesota.
Dr Holmes’s interests outside of dermatology include Canadian walleye fishing, all types of photography, thoroughbred dachshund racing, donut making, internet surfing, world travel, and family activities.
