Professional Biography:

H. Irving Katz was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1966 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After initially becoming a clinical investigator at the Minneapolis Veterans Hospital he started in private dermatology practice and continued in this for over 30 years. For over 20 years he has specialized in performing clinical research for a vast variety of skin disorders including acne, atopic dermatitis, photoaging, rosacea, psoriasis, urticaria and many other related cutaneous conditions. He has been either a primary or secondary investigator in over 250 clinical research studies. He has been a member of the clinical faulty in the Department of Dermatology since 1969 with teaching assignments at the Ramsay Hospital and the Fairview University Hospital in the past.

Dr. Katz was born in Minneapolis, MN. He received his undergraduate training in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with a BA degree, Magna Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1958. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical School, University of Minnesota and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 1961. Dr. Katz completed his rotating internship at the United States Naval Hospital located in St. Albans, NY in 1962 and performed his residency training in dermatology at United States Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, PA 1962-1963 and in the Department of Dermatology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN1966-1968.

Dr. Katz is Board certified in Dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology (1968) and holds a certificate in Special Competency in Dermatopathology from the American Board of Dermatology and American Board of Pathology (1974). Currently, he is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota with part-time teaching and clinical responsibilities at the Fairview University Medical Center and the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is the author of approximately 100 medical related publications and has participated as a speaker in a score of academic conferences. He has been active consultant for variety of new dermatological medications for several pharmaceutical companies. He currently restricts his clinical activity to performing clinical research and teledermatology consultations in the Department of Dermatology on a limited part-time basis.

He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (active-life), America Medical Association (retired), Hennepin County Medical Society (retired), Minnesota Medical Association (retired), Minnesota Dermatological Society and the Noah Worcester Dermatological Society.
